We invite you to participate in the 11th National Maritime Law Conference, “Prevention of Marine Pollution by Ships: MARPOL – 50 Years On and What Next?”, which will be held on April 20, 2023, at the Faculty of Law and Administration of the University of Gdańsk.
The conference is organized by the Department of Maritime Law at the Faculty of Law and Administration of the University of Gdańsk (UG), the UG Centre for the Maritime Economics Studies, and the European Law Students’ Association (ELSA) Gdańsk. Marine pollution is a global problem. In practice, effectively preventing marine pollution requires adherence to the preventive standards set out in the International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships (MARPOL). The aim of MARPOL is to prevent, limit, and eliminate pollution entering the marine environment and the atmosphere from ships-whether resulting from the discharge of harmful substances during normal operations or from accidental releases- covering categories such as oil, harmful substances carried in bulk, harmful substances in packaged form, sewage, garbage, and air pollutants.
At the 11th OKPM, we will discuss the significance of MARPOL as a regulatory instrument for managing ship-source pollution in modern maritime shipping, as well as its future role in environmental protection- including the marine environment (the World Ocean)- in line with the Sustainable Development Goals. This year’s edition of the conference is accompanied by a Young Researchers’ Panel and an international seminar titled “Roman Maritime Law.” Both events will take place the day before- on April 19, 2023.
