On June 24, 2024, Professor Dorota Pyć, Director of the Centre for the Maritime Economics Studies, was appointed Chair of the KIGM Council for the 2024–2028 term.
Professor Dorota Pyć is a law graduate of the University of Gdańsk. She earned her doctoral and habilitation degrees in law (specializing in public international law) from the University of Gdańsk’s Faculty of Law and Administration.
She has been affiliated with her alma mater since 1995- initially as a doctoral student in the Department of Maritime Law, and subsequently as an assistant professor in the Department of Public International Law. In 2013, she was appointed as an associate professor at the university. She has headed the Department of Maritime Law since 2014.
Her career path has extended beyond academia. She applied her expertise in maritime law while serving as Undersecretary of State- first at the Ministry of Transport, Construction and Maritime Economy, and later at the Ministry of Infrastructure and Development- where she was responsible for maritime economy affairs. She concluded her tenure following the change of government in 2015.
From 2008 to 2019, she served on the Maritime Law Codification Commission. Since 2018, she has been an arbitrator at the International Court of Arbitration at the National Maritime Chamber of Commerce in Gdynia. Since 2022, she has served as Director of the University of Gdańsk’s Centre for Maritime Economy Research and as head of the postgraduate program “Education for Sustainable Development: Offshore Wind Energy.” From 2019 to 2020, she served as the University’s Vice-Rector for International Cooperation and as a member of the University Council. She is active in the University of Gdańsk’s Social Responsibility Committee and the Fahrenheit Universities Women’s Club, of which she is a co-founder and board member. In March 2024, she became President of the Port of Gdańsk (having served on the Port’s Management Board since 2019) and was appointed to the Advisory Legal Committee to the Minister of Foreign Affairs. Since June 2024, she has served as Chairwoman of the National Maritime Chamber of Commerce in Gdynia.
The Professor’s academic output comprises scholarly works in the fields of maritime law, the law of the sea, and the law regarding the protection of the marine environment and sustainable development. She is the author or co-author of over 150 original research articles and book chapters, two monographs, commentaries on legislation, and legal case notes, as well as the editor of more than 20 publications.
